GCSE Mathematics & English
General Entry Requirements
A/AS Level • Requirement at GCSE
5 Grade Cs or above including English Language and Maths, or at least a Merit at Level 2. We would normally expect at least a grade B in the subjects you intend to study. (If your average GCSE point score is above 5.0 we will consider a student who does not have English or Maths for certain subjects.)
Vocational Level 3 • Requirement at GCSE
5 Grade Cs or above plus at least an average point score of above 4.0 and/or at least a Merit at Level 2
Vocational Level 2 (Intermediate) • Requirement at GCSE
Average score of 4 points (Ds) from your top 5 GCSEs or a Merit at Level 1
Vocational Level 1 (Foundation) • Requirement at GCSE
Average score of 2 points (Es) from your top 5 GCSEs
GCSE Enrichment Courses
No previous art experience is needed but you should have 5 GCSE passes.
GCSE Maths or English Re-takes
D at GCSE in the relevant subject. Maths is offered to students who attained a grade D at Intermediate Level and who produced 2 pieces of coursework.
Please Note:
- Some subjects have additional entry requirements as outlined in the prospectus
- The AS courses usually involve 2 modules taken at the end of Year 12
- The A2 courses usually involve 2 modules at the end Year 13
- A module can be re-taken and the best grade counts.
- To progress from AS to A2 you will need to have passed the relevant AS subject with D or above. Occasionally we might let students who obtained an E progress if there are extenuating circumstances.

Hillsyde Open Information Evenings
Open Evenings usually take place early in November each year at Sydenham School, Dartmouth Road, SE26 4RD.
